Caring for Underground and Overhead Tanks: Differences and Upkeep After Cleaning

Each tank type has its usual problems. Here's what to watch and how to keep a tank in shape after cleaning.

Most Saudi homes rely on an underground and an overhead tank. They're exposed differently to heat, dust and leaks, so they need different care.

The underground tank

A leak can go unseen for a long time, raising the bill and affecting surrounding soil. Watch for level loss with valves closed, damp around it, and a tight hatch to keep out dust and surface water.

The overhead tank

It sits in direct sun and heat, and leaks usually show on the roof or top-floor ceilings. Check the float valve, connections, base and lid.

After cleaning

To keep the tank in shape:

  • Keep the hatch tightly closed
  • Never add household cleaners or products not meant for drinking water
  • Watch for sediment, cloudiness or odour
  • Note the cleaning date so you know when to review
  • Act on any crack seen during cleaning rather than putting it off

How often does a tank need cleaning?

No single interval fits every tank. It depends on tank type, sediment, supply and how well it's sealed. Sediment, cloudiness or a long gap since the last clean are signals to review it.
