How to Choose the Right Waterproofing for Your Home

Questions that help you work out what your roof, bathroom or tank needs before picking a material.

“What's the best waterproofing?” has no single answer. The right choice depends on location, the problem and the surface condition. Rather than starting with a product name, start with what you need to protect and from what.

Start with these questions

Before choosing anything:

  • The problem: water ingress, heat or both?
  • Where: exposed roof, bathroom floor or inside a drinking-water tank?
  • Will it be tiled over or left exposed to sun?
  • What's the condition of the surface and old layer?
  • Have you ruled out a leaking pipe?

How needs differ

An exposed roof needs a system that withstands sun and heat, or a protective layer. A bathroom floor needs continuous waterproofing turned up the shower walls. Inside a tank, the material must suit drinking-water contact. If the issue is heat, thermal insulation is needed — and it doesn't replace waterproofing.

Don't choose the material before assessment

Choosing a system without assessment can lead to the wrong fix. After assessment we explain suitable options with their pros and limits, then you decide.
