Why Water Pipes Leak Inside Walls

What makes a buried pipe leak, and how the signs show before damage spreads.

Pipes inside walls can't be seen, so leaks are usually found after damp or a higher bill appears. Knowing the causes helps you understand what's happening and what a repair may involve.

Common causes

Frequent causes:

  • Weak or damaged joints and elbows
  • Ageing or corroded pipes over the years
  • High or fluctuating water pressure
  • Installation errors during construction or renovation
  • A pipe pierced when fixing screws or shelves

How the signs appear

Damp or peeling in one area, a slowly growing stain, running-water sounds with taps closed, or the meter moving without use. The stain's position doesn't always mark the pipe; water can travel inside the wall first.

From detection to repair

The leak is located without breaking, then only a specific spot is opened for repair. When we carry out the repair, the detection fee is deducted from its cost.
