Visible vs Hidden Leaks: How They Affect Water Use

From a running toilet to the underground tank — where water goes and what to check before requesting service.

Some leaks can be seen and heard; others happen underground or in walls with no sign but the bill. Telling them apart helps you fix what you can and request inspection for what needs it.

Visible leaks

Usually noticeable:

  • A toilet that keeps running after flushing
  • A dripping tap
  • An overhead tank float that won't shut, so it overflows
  • A leak under the sink or water heater

Hidden leaks

Usually need detection:

  • A supply pipe in a wall or under tiles
  • The line between meter and underground tank
  • A crack in the underground tank
  • A leak in a buried irrigation line

Steps before requesting service

Start by fixing or reporting what you can see, then run the meter test with all taps closed. Close the underground tank valve and watch its level for a few hours. If use continues with no visible cause, it's time for specialist inspection.
