Water Leak or Drainage Problem? The Difference

Clean supply water and waste water cause different signs — and need different fixes.

A home has two separate networks: pressurised supply pipes and the drain network carrying used water. When damp or odour appears, knowing which network is involved saves time and directs the inspection.

Signs of a supply leak

Damp is often constant because the pipe is always pressurised:

  • Meter moving with taps closed
  • Constant damp unrelated to use
  • Higher water bill
  • Odourless water

Signs of a drain problem

Usually tied to when a bathroom or kitchen is used:

  • Damp that grows after showers or sink use
  • Sewer smell
  • Slow drainage or backing up
  • No meter movement

Why it matters

A supply leak needs detection and plumbing repair; a drain problem may need clearing or drain-line repair. Sometimes failed bathroom waterproofing is the cause. These are clues, not a diagnosis; inspection confirms the source.
